How to Read Your BESCOM Electricity Meter

Reading your meter correctly is the first step to using this BESCOM electricity bill calculator accurately.

Your BESCOM meter shows total units (kWh) consumed since installation. Bengaluru and the surrounding districts are now largely on digital and smart meters, which display the current reading on a cycling screen showing reading, load, and instantaneous demand. For older electromechanical meters, read the number before the decimal point.

Note: Rates per the KERC Tariff Order 2025 (LT-1 Domestic), effective 1 April 2025. KERC has abolished the old progressive slabs — domestic energy is now a single flat rate of ₹5.80/unit for all consumption, with fixed charges of ₹145/kW of sanctioned load. Two per-unit surcharges apply on top: a Pension & Gratuity (P&G) surcharge of ₹0.36/unit, and a temporary FY25 true-up charge of ₹0.56/unit (recovered May 2026–April 2027). Rural connections in Village Panchayat areas get a ₹0.30/unit rebate. Eligible households also receive up to 200 free units/month under the Gruha Jyothi scheme. Tips to Reduce Your Karnataka Electricity Bill

1.  Karnataka provides free electricity up to 25 units/month to BPL card holders under the Kutira Jyothi scheme — verify your eligibility at your BESCOM office.

2. Stay within your Gruha Jyothi entitlement (FY2022-23 average + 10 units, capped at 200 units) to keep your energy and fixed charges subsidised — cross 200 units in a month and the full bill applies for that month.

3.  Install solar panels — Karnataka has excellent solar irradiation and BESCOM offers net metering allowing you to export surplus power to the grid.

4.  Use BLDC motor fans which consume just 28–35W compared to 70–80W of conventional fans — a major saving given Bangalore’s year-round use of fans.
