How to Read Your BESCOM Electricity Meter
Reading your meter correctly is the first step to using this BESCOM electricity bill calculator accurately.
Your BESCOM meter shows total units (kWh) consumed since installation. Bengaluru and the surrounding districts are now largely on digital and smart meters, which display the current reading on a cycling screen showing reading, load, and instantaneous demand. For older electromechanical meters, read the number before the decimal point.
To estimate your bill, note your current reading and subtract the “previous reading” printed on your last BESCOM bill to get the units consumed for the month. Enter that figure into the BESCOM electricity bill calculator above for an instant estimate covering the flat ₹5.80/unit energy charge, fixed charges, the P&G and FY25 true-up surcharges, and 6% electricity duty.
BESCOM bills domestic consumers monthly, so enter your single-month units. If you are a Gruha Jyothi beneficiary, check your sanctioned entitlement first — staying within it keeps your bill subsidised, while crossing 200 units in a month means the full flat-rate bill applies. Smart-meter users can also track real-time consumption through the BESCOM Mitra app.
BESCOM / Karnataka domestic (LT-1), FY2025-26 — flat single rate (KERC abolished slabs):
| Component | Rate |
| Energy charge (all units) | ₹5.80 / unit |
| Fixed charge | ₹145 / kW / month |
| P&G surcharge | ₹0.36 / unit |
| FY25 true-up (May 2026 – Apr 2027) | ₹0.56 / unit |
| Electricity duty | 6% on energy + fixed |
Note: Rates per the KERC Tariff Order 2025 (LT-1 Domestic), effective 1 April 2025. KERC has abolished the old progressive slabs — domestic energy is now a single flat rate of ₹5.80/unit for all consumption, with fixed charges of ₹145/kW of sanctioned load. Two per-unit surcharges apply on top: a Pension & Gratuity (P&G) surcharge of ₹0.36/unit, and a temporary FY25 true-up charge of ₹0.56/unit (recovered May 2026–April 2027). Rural connections in Village Panchayat areas get a ₹0.30/unit rebate. Eligible households also receive up to 200 free units/month under the Gruha Jyothi scheme. Sample Calculation: 250-Unit BESCOM Bill
Here’s a worked example using this BESCOM electricity bill calculator for a domestic (LT-1) consumer using 250 units on a 2 kW load, billed at the full flat rate (above the Gruha Jyothi free limit):
Energy charge: 250 × ₹5.80 = ₹1,450.00
P&G surcharge: 250 × ₹0.36 = ₹90.00
FY25 true-up: 250 × ₹0.56 = ₹140.00
Fixed charge (₹145/kW × 2 kW): ₹290.00
Electricity duty (6% on energy + fixed): ₹104.40
Estimated total: ₹1,450 + ₹90 + ₹140 + ₹290 + ₹104.40 = ₹2,074.40 (approx.)
Enter 250 in the BESCOM electricity bill calculator above to see this exact breakdown. Gruha Jyothi households within their entitlement would instead see a subsidised total.
What is Included in Your BESCOM Electricity Bill?

| Fuel Surcharge | Quarterly variable charge to account for fluctuating fuel and power purchase costs. Approved by KERC. |
| Electricity Duty | State government levy 6% on energy + fixed under the Karnataka Electricity (Taxation on Consumption) Act. |

Tips to Reduce Your Karnataka Electricity Bill
1. Karnataka provides free electricity up to 25 units/month to BPL card holders under the Kutira Jyothi scheme — verify your eligibility at your BESCOM office.
2. Stay within your Gruha Jyothi entitlement (FY2022-23 average + 10 units, capped at 200 units) to keep your energy and fixed charges subsidised — cross 200 units in a month and the full bill applies for that month.
3. Install solar panels — Karnataka has excellent solar irradiation and BESCOM offers net metering allowing you to export surplus power to the grid.
4. Use BLDC motor fans which consume just 28–35W compared to 70–80W of conventional fans — a major saving given Bangalore’s year-round use of fans.
5. Apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana — Karnataka consumers can avail central government subsidy of up to ₹78,000 on rooftop solar.
Frequently Asked Questions — BESCOM Electricity Bill
Q1: What are the current BESCOM domestic rates?
Ans: For FY2025-26, KERC moved domestic (LT-1) to a single flat rate: ₹5.80 per unit for all consumption, plus a ₹145/kW monthly fixed charge. On top of this, a ₹0.36/unit P&G surcharge and a temporary ₹0.56/unit FY25 true-up (May 2026–April 2027) apply, along with electricity duty.
Q2: Why doesn’t BESCOM use slabs anymore?
Ans: KERC abolished the old 3–5 slab system in the 2025 order and replaced it with a single flat energy rate. This means your bill now scales linearly with consumption — high-usage households no longer face steeply compounding higher-slab rates.
Q3: What is the Gruha Jyothi scheme?
Ans: Gruha Jyothi provides up to 200 free units of electricity per month to eligible domestic households in Karnataka. Eligibility is based on your average monthly consumption (FY2022-23 average plus 10 units). If you stay within your entitlement, energy and fixed charges are subsidised; if you cross 200 units in a month, the subsidy is withdrawn for that month and the full bill applies.
Q4: What are the P&G and FY25 true-up surcharges on my bill?
Ans: The Pension & Gratuity (P&G) surcharge is a standing ₹0.36/unit charge. The FY25 true-up is a temporary ₹0.56/unit charge approved by KERC to recover a past-year revenue gap; it appears as a separate line and is levied only from May 2026 to April 2027.
Q5: Do rural consumers pay less?
Ans: Yes. Domestic connections in Village Panchayat areas (outside Urban Development Authority limits) receive a ₹0.30/unit rebate on the energy charge.
Q6: How do I pay my BESCOM bill?
Ans: Pay online at bescom.karnataka.gov.in or through the BESCOM Mitra app and UPI apps, using your account/RR number. For outages or billing complaints, the BESCOM helpline is 1912.
